Musakhel District

Located in northeastern Balochistan, Musakhel District is a rugged frontier territory within the Loralai Division. It borders Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab, maintaining cross-provincial links via regional highway routes. The district contains four tehsils—Musakhel, Kingri, Drogh, and Toisar—with Musakhel town serving as the administrative headquarters. The local economy relies on livestock pastoralism, small-scale farming, and extensive untapped deposits of coal and gypsum.

Priority issues & challenges

1. Road infrastructure

Musakhel is connected via inter-provincial routes, but roads in Kingri, Drogh, Toisar, and mountain passes remain poorly maintained, landslide-prone, and highly flood-prone.

2. Water supply

Safe drinking water remains limited due to a lack of filtration infrastructure, deep-plunging water tables, natural sulfur contamination, and high salinity in remote border areas.

3. Health

Healthcare depends on Musakhel DHQ Hospital, an RHC, and scattered BHUs, but severe shortages of doctors, female staff, medicines, and emergency diagnostics restrict specialized care.

4. Unemployment

Employment is constrained by a lack of commercial markets, minimal industrial diversification, skills gaps, and weak private investment for pastoralist and rural youth.

5. Environmental challenges

Water scarcity, expanding desertification, rapid groundwater depletion, severe soil erosion from hill torrents, and flash flooding threaten local agriculture, livestock, and livelihoods.
